Shortwave Division Multiplexing (SWDM):


More data: SWDM uses many different light wavelengths on one MMF, so it can carry more data than regular MMF.

Saves money: It’s cheaper to use SWDM to add more capacity to existing MMF systems than to put in more SMF.


More complicated: SWDM needs more gear and is harder to set up than regular MMF.

It doesn’t reach as far: It can’t send signals as far as SMF, especially at higher data speeds.
